Hanuman

Describing how Vayudeva had once assured Anjana that he would take birth as her son, Sutji told the sages—Anjana, being issue less even after a long married life, decided to do penance in order to beget a son. Sage Matang advised her to go to Akashganga teerth where her wishes would get fulfilled. Sage Matang also described the geographical location– ‘At a distance of ten yojans towards south is situated Dhanachal mountain, which is believed to be the abode of Lord Nrisimha. Brahma teerth lies in its vicinity. At a distance of ten yojans south of Brahma teerth, flows river ‘Suvarnamukhari’. Venkentachal mountain is situated to the north of this river and the holiest place called Swamipushkarni is situated among its numerous peaks. You should visit that place and take a holy dip in its water. After that you should seek the blessings of Lord Varahaswami and Lord Venketeshwar. You should then go towards north of Swami teerth and you would reach Akashganga.’
Acting as per Matang’s instructions, Anjana went to Akashganga teerth and did her penance. Finally Lord Vayudeva appeared before her and promised to incarnate as Hanuman.
According to the legend, Lord Hanuman in his youthful age wanted to leave Tirumala, in search of a camel. This forced his mother Anjana Devi to tie his hands with cuffs and order him to stay in that place till she returned. However, it is believed that Anjana Devi stayed back in Akasa Ganga area and never returned to this place. Hence, the icon of Lord Hanuman in this temple will be seen in a unique form where both his hands were handcuffed (“Bedi-Cuffs”).

Vayu and Shesha

Vayu (God of Wind) and Seshu (the snake on whom Lord Vishnu resides in Vaikuntham) fights with each other on the issue of 'who is the strongest?'. Seshu says that he is the greatest and strongest because he has Lord Vishnu on him taking rest! He bears the great God, so he is greatest. Then Narada enters the scene.

To decide who is the strongest, Narada asks Vayu first to lift a large mountain and throw it away. Then comes the turn of Seshu who has to lift the mountain and throw it away. Even on exerting great force, Seshu could not lift it but he himself becomes a victim, of the great weight of mountain which falls on him. Seshu, who is hitherto living under the mirage of ego of himself being the strongest, prays Lord Vishnu and asks Him to regain him from the mighty mountain. Lord Vishnu thereby saves Seshu, who now prays the Lord to be seated on him again, as usual. Lord Vishnu asks him to wait until He reincarnates on the Earth as Srinivasa. Seshadri, one of the seven sacred hills, is the mountain on which Lord Venkateswara stands now in Tirumala.
