Yaganti

The damaged idol of Lord Venkateswara is present in this cave. Compared to Agastya cave it is easy to climb though the steps are steep. According to the story this idol was present in this cave before the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple was constructed. But as the idol is damaged near the foot, it could not be worshipped. Veera Brahmam tells us in his Kala Gynanam that this place can stand as an alternative to Tirupati.

Importance of Temple in Ancient Legends

Every scripture states different stories about Tirupati temple.
  1. In Skand Puran, it is mentioned that only meditating Tirupati makes generations of a person fortunate. The devotee attains salvation and gets a place in Vishnulok.
  2. According to Varah Puran, Tirumala hill is called Varah area. There is a sacred river in Tirumalai called Pushkarani river. Varah Puran says that Lord Vishnu too birth here as Lord Shrinivas.
  3. According to the scriptures, when the temple gates are closed in the night then Lord Brahma along with the other Gods come here and worship Lord Vishnu.
  4. The scriptures also depict that Venkatam hill was brought on earth by Garuda, the transport of Lord Vishnu.
  5. This hill is the playground of Lord Vishnu.
  6. This hill is also known by the name of Sheshachalam as sheshachalam is considered the incarnation of Sheshnag.
  7. Bhavishyapuran states that once when Lord Vishnu was sleeping in his bedroom then Sage Bhrigucame and kicked hardly on Lord Vishnus chest. This hurted Mata Lakshami a lot and she went away from there. This pained Lord Vishnu and he incarnated himself as a God of removing sins and started living on Tirumala hills. Due to this, he was called God Shrinivas.
  8. Vayu Puran states that the whole area of Tirupati is the most adorable place of Lord Vishnu after Vaikunth Dham. Lord Vishnu likes residing at this place very much.

Vrishabhasura

Once upon a time, there was one staunch devotee (asura) of Lord Vishnu by name Vrishabhasura. Once he performs ghora-tapas for the Lord. The Lord appears and readies to shower boons on the asura. But Vrishabhadra asks a boon which Lord Vishnu readily accepts. The boon was 'Vrishabhasura's desire to fight with the Lord'.

The fight began and both sides put in their strengths. Even after putting up a very brave front, Vrishabhasura is defeated by Lord Vishnu. The Lord first destroys the 'Aham' (or Ego) of Vrishabhasura. The asura then begs Lord to forgive him and asks asylum which the Lord readily grants.

Then Vrishabhasura asks the Lord to put His LotusFeet on his head and rest there! Lord Vishnu assures Vrishabhasura that, during Kali yuga, He is going to reincarnate as Lord Venkateswara and he would rest on him. Vrishabhasura becomes a big mountain on earth and waits for the Lord to come down to earth. At last, during Kali yugam, the Lord reincarnates as Venkateswara and rests on the mountain/hill fulfilling the desire of Vrishabhasura.
